In honour of my dog Victor, who passed away July 13, 2020, my new dog Victoria (yes, named after Victor) and I are participating in the annual SPCA Hamilton/Burlington Wiggle Waggle Walkathon in September, 2021. Only this time, there’s no walkathon. Participants are asked to ‘walk their way’ and share how they’re celebrating the shelter’s […]
After a few false starts due to ‘you know what,’ Hounds of Erie Winery in Clear Creek, Ontario, Canada hosted The Top Dog Tasting and Photoshoot dog-friendly event August 14 and 15, 2021. Spread out through an orchard vineyard and cornfield, the socially distanced outdoor event was exactly what housebound hounds and their people needed.
The Paddle Art Tour Haldimand (PATH) is like a tourist scavenger hunt through several small towns dotting a large rural area. But don’t worry – the paddles aren’t hard to find considering the address of each is listed in the guide (here). All are located where visitors and locals are likely to gather: parks, riverside trails, marinas, farmers markets … all locations worth a road-trip stop, anyway. Especially with the dog.
Theodore arrived at his new home July 18, 2021 from Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he was previously docked for two decades. Now Theodore Too tugboat is located along the dog friendly Hamilton, Ontario waterfront walk.
Kissimmee is the area in Florida south of Orlando, close enough to Orlando’s iconic attractions including Walt Disney World, Universal, Gatorland Theme Park and Wildlife Preserve and SeaWorld that it’s a popular travel destination for multi-generational travel, families, girlfriend getaways, couples and individuals … all possibly taking the pets along.
How to road trip with your dog on a budget: here’s the ultimate packing list for traveling with your pet and a Red Roof discount code. Red Roof Inn is always dog friendly for no added charge.
Selkirk Provincial Park in Haldimand County, Ontario is my favourite dog daytrip escape for two reasons: it’s an easy country drive from my home, and there’s a dog-friendly exercise area and beach in this otherwise compact of the provincial parks. Dog-friendly beaches are a welcome reprieve in the early summer heat.
Parking near Howlers Corners, the Ken Reid Conservation Area in Lindsey, Ontario, Canada leash-free dog park, is $4, a bargain considering there’s no admission charge. A bit of a rustic dog park – rustic because a chicken-wire style fence (which my dog ran straight into) blends with the foliage and surrounds a partially wooded area. There’s a double gate at the entrance, but the ground is worn down enough that my pup could shimmy underneath, which she did.
Travel to Ottawa, Ontario with your dog and make a doggone great weekend of it – stay in Nepean at the Sandman Hotel – a boutique-style pet-friendly hotel along Hunt Club Road.
Not only is it a good-value contemporary hotel with fridge and coffee makers, it will put you at the midpoint between two awesome leash-free dog parks: Conroy Pit in one direction and Bruce Pit in the other, both run by the National Capital Commission (NCC), an organization established to keep the nation’s capital a quality outdoorsy destination. #dogtravel #ottawa
Woodhaven Country Lodge and Resort offers just that and more – each of the five cottage-style units on the property have fenced dog runs, so you can wake up, open the door, let the dog out, and not worry about losing him to the lure of the forest. Dogs aren’t mandatory at Woodhaven, but the resort is designed to be as pet-friendly as possible. If your dog sleeps on the bed at home, they can sleep on the bed at Woodhaven, that’s actually a resort rule.
