This is Not a Holiday Gift Guide: 8 One-of-a-Kind dog items on my wish list

“Why do you have horses, cats and dogs all over your house?” my adolescent nephew asked me recently. I didn’t understand the question. Here’s my confession: I’m an animal art addict. I didn’t mean to be, that’s just what I’ve become after decades of roaming art and craft shows big and small. It’s true, especially […]

Can Your Dog Glow in the Dark? Find out! #sponsored

The Doggone Red Overcollar™ I received is easy to slip on and off, fits over the existing collar, and has a slit that easily lets the collar’s D-ring slid through so I can clip on a leash. If I use a harness or a winter coat, the Overcollar doesn’t interfere.

Travel Pennslyvania: Day 8 Pet-Friendly Amusement Park on The Red Roof Road Trip with the Dog

The Pioneer Train at Knoebels Amusement Resort is one of three rides you can do with your dog. I found this out from a couple also traveling here with their dog, just before the three of them climbed on the boat ride. The Grand Carousel is apparently the third.

Dog on chair at Red Roof Inn in Virginia

Day 7: On The Red Roof Road Trip with the Dog we find a Pup Cup in Virginia

My dog Victor got a ‘pup cup’ – one scoop of vanilla ice cream with a dog biscuit on top. He didn’t eat the cookie (he’s been very fussy on this trip). But he did finish the ice cream in the seating area outside the building – the only seating area. Fortunately, there’s a drinking fountain.

Travel London, ON: Pawlooza Rocks with Dogs (even in the heat)

My dog Victor is zonked. Too much heat, excitement and energetic dogs panting around him at Pawlooza, one of the biggest and best annual dog festivals in Southern Ontario. The August 20, 2016 event benefited both animal rescue organizations and an employment non-profit. (See last year’s coverage here). Each year in August, the Plunkett family […]

Dog-friendly Shaker Village Kentucky

Travel Kentucky: Dog Devotion at the Shaker Village Red Roof Road Trip Day 3

‘Shake, rattle and roll’ is strangely what I think watching Victor, my 11-year-old schnoodle, waddle around the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, about 40 minutes outside of Lexington, Kentucky. (Some will tell you it’s 20-minutes, but the scenic Highway 68 drive carving through Kentucky mountains takes a while). Once the third largest Shaker community in […]

Travel Las Vegas: Top 10 SuperZoo Finds 2016

SuperZoo is the World Pet Association’s mega pet industry trade show held annually in Las Vegas. This year more than 1200 exhibitors participated, and if you doubt the growth, size and even influence of the pet industry in North America, spend two days walking and talking the 8,5000 square feet of trade show floor and, after you collapse, your mind will be changed – and blown.

Dog at Red Roof Inn

Welcome to The Red Roof 9 Day 5 State Road Trip with the Dog

Almost on a whim, I planned my next adventure: The Red Roof 9 Day 5 State Road Trip with the Dog. Victor and I will hop in the car and drive from one dog-friendly site to another in the U.S., covering an arc of 2,000 km of highway from Ohio to Pennsylvania via Kentucky, North […]

Travel Milton, Ontario: Dogs on a Train (and Streetcar)

Not often does a dog board a restored 1915 train car to journey a short distance for ice cream. It’s a dog life. A travelling dog. My 11-year-old schnoodle is becoming a train dog, whether he likes it or not. Actually, he’s very calm and comfortable sitting on my lap during short novelty train rides […]

dog at Canada Day festival

Travel Caledonia: Dog-friendly Canada Day!

The long weekend is over (in both North American countries) and you’re likely done hearing about Canada Day fun and Fourth of July festivities … along with plenty of advice about how to keep your pets safe during fireworks. Well, I have none of the latter and a recap of the former because I took […]
