Westminster Dog Show 2017 Meet and Compete

NYC Westminster Dog Show: AKC Meet and Compete … cats too! (Part III)

Pier 92 a long New York City’s Hudson River isn’t everyone’s first stop during a visit to the Big Apple. However, Saturday of the Westminster Dog Show weekend, that’s where I headed, after checking into the dog-friendly Pennsylvania Hotel (affiliate link) across from Madison Square Gardens – the nerve centre for all things dog show. But before […]

Take your Dog to Erie, PA: Show Your Travelling Dog Some Love in February Getaway (Part I)

(Thank you to our sponsor Red Roof Inn for providing accommodations on this trip!) Show your dog some love this month. Take him/her on a road trip, even for a weekend. This is Not a Holiday Gift Guide: 8 One-of-a-Kind dog items on my wish list

“Why do you have horses, cats and dogs all over your house?” my adolescent nephew asked me recently. I didn’t understand the question. Here’s my confession: I’m an animal art addict. I didn’t mean to be, that’s just what I’ve become after decades of roaming art and craft shows big and small. It’s true, especially […]

Travel Michigan Part 2: Testing a New Way to Road Trip with the Dog

Every fall I head to the Rochester Writer’s Conference at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan. I have for about six years. (Next year is the 10th Anniversary, so I’m expecting a party). This year, I brought my terrier Victor – not to the conference, but on this trip because this state, particularly around Rochester, […]

Travel Michigan Part 1: The Rochester Writer’s Conference with the dog

Every fall I make a pilgrimage to the Rochester’s Writers Conference in Rochester Hills, Michigan. It’s one excellent day of writing-related seminars on topics from character development in fiction to self-publishing for non-fiction writers. Six sessions plus lunch and a keynote speaker makes the three-hour drive worth it. It has nothing to do with dogs. […]

travel dog-friendly Apple Pie Trail

Travel Collingwood, ON: Dog-friendly Apple Pie Trail combines culinary tourism and canine love

“Can I bring my dog here and have lunch on your patio?” I ask Bob Giffen of Giffen’s Country Market in Glen Huron, a five-generation family operation in along Ontario’s Apple Pie Trail near Georgian Bay in Canada. “Of course,” he says. “And you can walk the trails long the pond and through the orchard […]

Dog on chair at Red Roof Inn in Virginia

Day 7: On The Red Roof Road Trip with the Dog we find a Pup Cup in Virginia

My dog Victor got a ‘pup cup’ – one scoop of vanilla ice cream with a dog biscuit on top. He didn’t eat the cookie (he’s been very fussy on this trip). But he did finish the ice cream in the seating area outside the building – the only seating area. Fortunately, there’s a drinking fountain.

Dog at SuperCrawl outdoor art event

7 Tips for taking your dog to SuperCrawl – or any outdoor festival

The idea behind Art Crawl was to bring more people to a struggling downtown in a somewhat struggling city. It was an amazing success. Now, the monthly Art Crawl and its big sister the annual SuperCrawl are major city attractions – without losing their grassroots charm.

Travel London, ON: Pawlooza Rocks with Dogs (even in the heat)

My dog Victor is zonked. Too much heat, excitement and energetic dogs panting around him at Pawlooza, one of the biggest and best annual dog festivals in Southern Ontario. The August 20, 2016 event benefited both animal rescue organizations and an employment non-profit. (See last year’s coverage here). Each year in August, the Plunkett family […]
