Image sleeping overnight in a historic train caboose … with your dog! That’s right – head to Smiths Falls, Ontario (about a 60-minute drive from Canada’s capital, Ottawa) and visit the Smiths Falls Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, a reconstructed 1921 train station at its original location, harkening back in the heydays of luxury rail passenger travel.

Take your dog to the water park … once a year. (Fundraising fun for water-loving pups)

Water parks for dogs should be a thing – I think there’s a business opportunity there. Water parks for kids, well, people (let’s not pretend) have become incredibly popular in towns and cities across North American. Whether that’s a small splash pad or full on wave pool, heading to the waterpark on a hot summer’s […]

Art Hound: Following the PATH with the dog in Dunnville, Ontario

The Paddle Art Tour Haldimand (PATH) is like a tourist scavenger hunt through several small towns dotting a large rural area. But don’t worry – the paddles aren’t hard to find considering the address of each is listed in the guide (here). All are located where visitors and locals are likely to gather: parks, riverside trails, marinas, farmers markets … all locations worth a road-trip stop, anyway. Especially with the dog.

Dog Road Trip to Selkirk Provincial Park and Port Dover, Ontario (plus dog beach!)

Selkirk Provincial Park in Haldimand County, Ontario is my favourite dog daytrip escape for two reasons: it’s an easy country drive from my home, and there’s a dog-friendly exercise area and beach in this otherwise compact of the provincial parks. Dog-friendly beaches are a welcome reprieve in the early summer heat.

dogs running leash free in Ken Reid Conservation area Lindsey, Ontario

Howlers Corners: Take your dog to Ken Reid Conservation Area and let her run… leash free

Parking near Howlers Corners, the Ken Reid Conservation Area in Lindsey, Ontario, Canada leash-free dog park, is $4, a bargain considering there’s no admission charge. A bit of a rustic dog park – rustic because a chicken-wire style fence (which my dog ran straight into) blends with the foliage and surrounds a partially wooded area. There’s a double gate at the entrance, but the ground is worn down enough that my pup could shimmy underneath, which she did.
