The Niagara Region in Ontario is an expanding Canadian wine region and every week in social media groups someone asks, where are the dog-friendly wineries? Ridge Road Winery is one of those wineries – focused on creating an experience near the vineyards rather than simply being an outlet for wine tasting and sales. And this experience, fortunately, includes the dog.
After a few false starts due to ‘you know what,’ Hounds of Erie Winery in Clear Creek, Ontario, Canada hosted The Top Dog Tasting and Photoshoot dog-friendly event August 14 and 15, 2021. Spread out through an orchard vineyard and cornfield, the socially distanced outdoor event was exactly what housebound hounds and their people needed.

Each Sunday, from May 2 to September 19, 2021, Hounds of Erie hosts a dog breed specific meetup for all canine enthusiasts. Of course, loving wine and hard cider helps doesn’t hurt either. Grab a glass of cider or vino at the tasting bar. Then, passed the free-run chickens, walk your leashed pup through the 32-acres of grape wines and apple trees – 21 varieties of apples to be specific. Snacks and a food truck available onsite too.
On a weekend road trip with my dog, we had to veer off the beaten path to find Hounds of Erie Winery, one of the newest additions to the Toast the Coast Trail, a self-guide tour of Norfolk County wineries in Ontario, Canada.
