What dog doesn’t look great next to bright yellow flowers? Dog-friendly sunflower farms are out there, but you need to know where to look in Ontario, Canada. And more importantly, know where you’re permitted to venture. Damaging crops or impacting traffic for side of the highway pics isn’t cool.
Sunflower fields are incredibly photogenic and some farms have experienced issues with people entering farms, and fields, illegally and damaging property. (People, not dogs). Don’t do that. Keep in mind, those acres of sunflowers you see are crops – someone’s income. The flowers are being grown to harvest, usually for seeds.

Agri-tourism and Sunflowers
Other farms have opened their doors to visitors in a controlled way. Some farms are acres of sunflowers only, but most open to the public for other reasons – such as pick your own fruit orchards – and have added sunflower fields as an attraction added to their agri-tourism efforts.
One of my favourite Ontario family farms is Brantwood Farms in Brantford. I took my dog to visit the sunflower field there recently, likely for the last time. The land Brantwood sits on is slated for development, which is unfortunate, considering how important it is for urbanites to learn where their food comes from.

Brantwood Farms, for now anyway, is very dog friendly. There’s plenty of parking in the side field. Then head behind the store to the admissions booth. Cost for an adult is $15 at the door, which includes cutting three sunflower stems to take home.
Dog-friendly Sunflower Farm: Brantwood Farms
When you first get to Brantwood Farms (251 Powerline Road, Brantford), you’ll need to sit in the large wagon pulled by a tractor to get out to the field – it’s a hike, so yes, the wagon ride is necessary. And the dog can climb onto the wagon too. My dog was very curious about the fields, trees, and pick-your-own boutique flower field that slowly passed by us as the tractor bumped along over the hilly path.
At the Brantwood sunflower field, there are scissors available for cutting and people there to help wrap flowers. Also, a play area for kids, food truck, picnic tables and even a cow and donkey in a pen.

My pup met her first cow, which she was extremely curious about and wanted to stick her head into the pen. Or maybe she wondered why there was a cow sitting in the dog park. My dog assumes every fenced area she sees is a leash-free zone.”. Chain-link fences everywhere are cause for excitement.
Leashes are required everywhere on the farm for the pups, yet we had a good hike through the tall stalks of sunflowers. Note: we went later in the day, so the crowds were smaller. But that’s when the flowers droop down. Sunflowers follow the sun, so getting to the sunflower farm before noon is ideal to experience the flowers at their best. And most allow you to bring your dog.

Exploring Farms in Ontario is an incredible way to experience the beauty of rural life while supporting local communities. From fresh produce to family-friendly activities, these farms offer so much more than just agriculture. Visiting them not only provides healthy food options but also helps sustain Ontario’s farming traditions and local economy.
