Recipe: Easy DYI Homemade Dog Pill Pockets

My dog is aging. If you’ve been following dogtrotting.net (thank you), you know he’s been diagnosed with dementia. Not great, and it requires daily supplements and medication. So, it’s pills twice a day from now on. Pill pockets have been helpful.

Hopefully, if you are giving your dog pills it’s temporary. However, it’s likely not easy.

I’ve been wrapping pills in peanut butter (xylitol free) for ages, but that gets messy.

Here’s an easier way to give your dog pills – and it’s cheaper than buying pill pockets (affiliate link): Make your own pill pockets.

The flour added to the peanut butter creates a slight stiffness, and the milk keeps them malleable even to wrap around pills. Make homemade pill pockets in small batches and keep them in the fridge. One disadvantage is they don’t store as long as bagged pill pockets, but dogs will eat them.

I topped a few with extra cream cheese for additional incentive – I need the pills to go down quickly and easily morning and night.

What You’ll Need:yorkie-nature-yorkshire-terrier-dog-wallpaper-preview

1 tablespoon of peanut butter

1 tablespoon of milk

2 tablespoons of flour (any kind)

Daps of plain cream cheese (optional)

What you’ll Do:

This doesn’t seem like it would make much, but this amount at one time is enough.

Mix all ingredients together: start with peanut butter in a bowl, add flour, then milk and mix into a playdough-like ball.

On a lightly floured surface, roll the ball of dough into a roll about one inch thick – similar to making homemade pasta.

Cut roll into one-inch pieces and mould around the end of your finger. The end result should be a deep bowl shape.

Put pill pockets into a container and leave in the fridge. Use one at a time – you should be able to press each one around a pill (or three in my case). Top with a dab of cream cheese (optional).

My dog eats these from the palm of my hand.

Yield: 10 (five days worth, for me)
