Pup Treat Recipe Day 2: Four-ingredient Oat Treats for Dogs and Horses

Four-ingredient Oat Treats for Dogs and Horses

Whenever we’ve got guests – or we are babysitting one fur-friend – I get out the cooking baking sheet and start experimenting with dog treat recipes. Most batches make more than Victor can eat, plus he’s a little picky, so having an extra set of canines in the house comes in handy.

For this round of oat treats, we’ll need some applesauce too. I found these on www.bakingmischief.com and barely modified it (which is rare).

What caught my eye? Treats for dogs and horses… horses too! I’m in.

Ingredients:

½ cup of steel-cut oats

½ cup of unsweetened applesauce

½ cup of grated carrot

½ cup whole wheat flour

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and cover a baking tray with parchment paper. (I won’t bake without it).

Mix all four ingredients in a medium bowl.

Use a tablespoon to drop clumps of the mixture on to the baking tray. I made one-bite-sized pieces appropriate for a large dog or horse.

Bake for 20 minutes until treats are set but not entirely dry.

The results? Neither dog really liked these and our guest Sasha, a large lab-cross, is usually not too choosy.

The horses? Loved them (check it out on horsetrotting.net). One followed me around for more (a reason to be extra cautious when treating a herd). Unfortunately, any horse that is allergic to apples (there are some) can’t eat these. Otherwise, oats, apples, carrots… what’s not for a horse to love?

The dogs? Not so much.
