Welcome to Day Two of Spoiling the Dog with Pumpkin Treats…
Today we take it up a notch from DAY ONE and add more ingredients.
Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
This time we take our previous simple pumpkin and peanut butter recipe and make it a step more complicated by adding eggs. Thanks to www.dessertfirstgirl.com for the basis of this recipe, though I’d recommend taking the 2 ½ cups of whole wheat flour down to 2 ¼ cups because more flour is too crumbly. (Add a bit of water if this is the case).
Also, this was thicker dough, which I combined with a fork because I don’t have a paddle mixer, even rolled out so using the bigger paw print cookie cutter seemed appropriate. (Yes, those are paws, not flowers).
Here’s the dogtrotting.net version of the recipe:
Preheat oven to 350 degree F
2 ½ (or 2 ¼) cup whole wheat flour
2 large eggs
¾ cup of canned pumpkin
3 tablespoons of peanut butter (no Xylitol, of course. I used Canadian Kraft smooth peanut butter).
Mix all the ingredients together.
Form a giant moist ball. (Yay, I said it).
Roll out with a sprinkling of four. Cut into shapes.
Bake 15 to 20 minutes.
Our ‘paw biscuits’ where slightly thicker than the ¼ inch usual, so I baked them for 16 minutes, flipping them over half way, and leave them a bit soft in the middle because my dog Victor prefers that over crunchy.
Victor’s visiting friend Sasha, a lab mix, eats pretty much everything and hesitantly ate three in a row. Victor quickly ate half of one, primarily because Sasha was eating. These cookies weren’t his favourite at first, but he ate more the next day.
But that‘s the beauty about baking for dogs. It doesn’t have to be perfect. And if you have a tough critic, like I do, remind him you’ve seen him with his head in the neighbour’s garbage. So his taste is not so discerning.
NOTE: Although the dogs like these in moderation, the shelf life is short. Mine lasted only three days in a container on the counter before I saw mold. Check carefully after a day or two.
