Welcome Daisy, our newest member of the dogtrotting.net family!
It’s official, we are a two-cat home. After losing my beloved Kaitlynn 18 months ago, the feline absence was too great. Besides, I didn’t want Victor to get used to not having a kitty buddy around.

So I adopted Sally, a special needs cat with allergy and dietary issues, from Cannon’s Cause, a rescue organization affiliated with Grand River Veterinary Clinic who took good care of Kaitlynn for years.
Sally loved other animals, so I found Daisy, also on a special diet due to stomach issues, from Ladybird Animal Rescue in Ontario, Canada.
Daisy is a beautiful two-year-old calico who, according to her foster mom, loves other cats and dogs.
Unfortunately, Sally and Daisy were not fast friends – yes, I did the gradual introduction through a door, but Daisy was having none of it. She wanted out of our guest room.
After three weeks, Sally and Daisy are chasing each other and smelling nose to nose. The hissing has (almost) stopped, but there’s no cuddles yet. Daisy is allowed on the cat climber one level below Sally.
How did my dog Victor respond to a new cat?
Surprisingly, he warmed up to Daisy almost immediately and let the girls work it out. I think he likes having some energy in the house, as long as he remains ‘top dog.’
One trick to being a multi-cat household? You become a multi-kitty litter household. I’ve got three – one for each cat and a spare.
What’s with the colours in the litter box?
We welcomed Daisy with NEON Litter, a silica gel cat litter with a twist – bright colours! Specifically, green, orange and pink, like icing on a cake only something cats like better: diggable litter. (disclaimer: we received NEON kitty litter complimentary from the company and are writing an honest review).
I discovered silica litter for Kaitlynn after she had a series of upper respiratory infections. The dust from clay litter irritated her and silica solved the problem.
NEON Litter is similar to what I have used, only smaller softer particles, still dust free, and clumps so it can be scooped like traditional litter. Plus, it’s colourful.
Added benefit: creating colourful ‘sand’ art for your kitty. So we welcomed Daisy with … a daisy.
But like any sand art, it’s temporary. I took Victor for a run after presenting the litter box and yes, someone scratched in the NEON daisy by the time we got home. I think it was Sally. Maybe she was making a point.
Don’t worry, there’s no ‘after’ pictures – be we do have three colour ‘coded’ litters throughout the house. One green, one orange and one pink.
Which one does Daisy prefer?
The one in the main bedroom of course. She’s decided she’s no longer a guest.

I don’t have a cat, so don’t need the litter, but welcome Daisy anyway. Sounds like they are all working out the idiosyncrasies of living together.
