Inside Spoil the Dog Bakery

It’s exciting when my dog Victor can come into a store with me. Of course, if the store is named Spoil the Dog Bakery, it’s reasonable that Fido should be allowed to follow. Here in St. Jacobs, Ontario, the bakery counter in the centre of a small store is surrounded by boutiquey items and antiques most women love to browse – so spoil yourself and the pooch.

Owner Rachelle Latour opened this storefront at 4 Hachborne Street three months ago, but started out in 2005 making dog treats and dog birthday and wedding cakes from her home. Yes, wedding cakes. A sample is displayed at Spoil the Dog if you’re curious.

The all-natural wheat-free treats are slow-baked to make them crunchy. Victor received a sample pack of the following: moon-shaped Peanut Butterfly Crunch; star-shaped organic garlic and cheese; heart-shaped organic carrot and cranberry and pumpkin-shaped Pumpkin Pie. The first ingredient listed on all is chickpea flour.

His favourite? Peanut Butter Crunch, of course.

Wheat-free birthday cakes with carob ‘icing’ are $19.95. And what’s a party without doggie loot bags for guests ($5.99 each)? We also left with a new bandana sporting Dr. Seuss characters because Victor needed it to match his One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish patterned collar he’d picked up at another artisan-shopping outing.

Jeez, that dog loves to shop.
